Giulia Scialpi researches urban mining and the use of biowaste and excavated soil as secondary resources for construction. Giulia Scialpi is a doctoral researcher at the University of Louvain working on urban mining, circular construction and the recovery of locally available secondary material flows. Her research focuses on the combined use of urban biowaste and excavated soil in building products and on the environmental and policy conditions required for their wider adoption in Belgium.
Her published review of the construction-sector literature identified both the long history of fibre-reinforced earth building and the limited research on jointly using urban biowaste and excavated soils in contemporary unfired construction. Her doctoral work extends this foundation through material-flow assessment, impact evaluation and policy-support approaches. It connects urban waste management with low-impact building technologies and the circular economy, asking how construction can reduce primary-resource demand while creating safe and useful destinations for urban residual materials. Her more recent work also contributes to research on circular and adaptable healthcare environments.
