Nicola Bertoldi is a philosopher and historian of science and a research collaborator of the Urban Metabolism Lab. He contributed to the F.R.S.–FNRS aIST-nexus programme at the University of Louvain and is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the ERC project Oecologie at Sorbonne Nouvelle University.

His research spans the history and philosophy of the life and environmental sciences, social ecology, urban metabolism and the development of scientific concepts. Within the Lab, he has combined conceptual engineering with computational analysis of research literature to investigate the meanings attached to urban metabolism and to link systems-based approaches with different structures and modalities of agency. His work identifies how actors, practices and social-ecological structures shape resource flows and stocks, helping to clarify the epistemological foundations of the field. He also develops digital-humanities methods, including semantic networks and topic modelling, to study scientific vocabularies and support dialogue across industrial, urban and social ecology.
