Yasmina Choueiri is a geographer, visiting assistant professor and research collaborator of the Urban Metabolism Lab. She completed her doctorate at the University of California, Davis, and has developed research on informal infrastructures, resource governance and the social and environmental consequences of hybrid urban service systems.

Her work with the Lab expands conventional material-flow analysis by integrating formal and informal resource flows in Brussels and Wallonia. She has developed frameworks that characterise informality across water, energy, waste, food and mobility and show how unregulated or community-organised systems interact with public infrastructure. Her research on informal water supply combines energy–water nexus analysis, carbon-footprint assessment and social-network analysis of tanker firms, while also addressing affordability, resilience and water justice. By making informal actors and flows visible, her work supports circular-economy and infrastructure policies that recognise the services these systems provide while responding to their environmental impacts and unequal outcomes.
