Project overview
Climate-Positive Design in Landscape Architecture examines the capacity of landscape practitioners to influence carbon and resource outcomes throughout a project’s life cycle. The project is grounded in the recognition that climate performance depends not only on design concepts but also on procurement, construction, maintenance, professional mandates and the institutional settings in which decisions are made.
The empirical research combines a practitioner survey, focus groups and interviews to map where agency is concentrated or constrained. It identifies barriers and enabling conditions across project stages and investigates the role of professional knowledge, client expectations, life-cycle information and shared assessment tools. This evidence is used to understand when landscape architects can act directly, when they depend on other actors and where collaborative boundary objects could improve decision-making.
The project connects the Lab’s agency research to climate-responsive design practice. It reframes climate-positive design as a distributed organisational process rather than the achievement of an individual designer, and it provides a basis for developing tools and professional practices that make resource and carbon consequences more legible at the moments when they can still be changed.
