The Social Metabolism Integration Framework develops a broader account of the services generated through material, energy and ecological processes. It responds to the fragmentation between social-metabolism research, ecosystem-service assessment and energy-service analysis.

The project develops a Resource Service Cascade that connects resource stocks and flows to the functions and services they make possible. By distinguishing ecosystem, energy and material services while tracing their interdependence, it creates a common language for assessing how natural and social capital contribute to human wellbeing. The framework is informed by interdisciplinary literature analysis and is intended to support dynamic rather than purely static assessment.

This F.R.S.-FNRS-supported postdoctoral work complements UMaNS and strengthens the conceptual foundations of integrated urban-metabolism assessment. It shifts attention from quantities of resources alone to the services, capabilities and inequalities produced through their transformation and use.
