Project overview
This visiting postdoctoral project investigates the metabolism of construction materials in Algiers and the potential of circular-economy strategies to reduce extraction, waste and dependency. It focuses on a rapidly transforming sector where building demand, demolition, infrastructure development and material supply chains interact.
The research seeks to characterise material inputs, stocks and waste streams and to identify where reuse, recycling and urban mining could be strengthened. Particular attention is given to the institutional, technical and spatial conditions of the Algiers construction sector, including the actors who control materials and the infrastructures required to recirculate them.
Conducted through collaboration between EPAU and the University of Louvain, the project extends the Lab’s circular-construction expertise into a North African metropolitan context. It also complements earlier work on urban symbiosis in Algiers by examining how local exchange and recovery strategies can be embedded in sectoral planning. No dedicated external grant is publicly named in the retained sources.
