Project overview
Urban Mining from Biowaste and Excavated Soil explores how locally available organic residues and mineral materials can be transformed into construction products for the Brussels-Capital Region. It treats waste streams as potential urban stocks while recognising that their reuse depends on material performance, processing infrastructure, regulation, logistics and market acceptance.
The research combines literature review, material-flow analysis, case-study work with small and medium-sized enterprises and the assessment of emerging building materials. It examines food and other biowaste, excavated soil and their possible incorporation into construction components, connecting waste valorisation with the demand generated by a growing city. Related studies document both the opportunities and the operational constraints faced by firms developing circular products.
This project links urban metabolism to construction practice and industrial innovation. It provides a foundation for later work on circular healthcare buildings and the CARING NATURE project, while demonstrating that urban mining must be assessed across the full chain from feedstock availability and processing to building performance and end-of-life recovery.
