Project overview

Urban Symbiosis in Algiers investigates how exchanges of energy and by-products among urban activities could reduce primary-resource demand and greenhouse-gas emissions. The project adapts industrial-symbiosis thinking to the urban scale, where diverse facilities, infrastructures and neighbourhoods may create opportunities for local resource exchange.

The associated study develops and tests a methodology for identifying potential exchanges and evaluating their energy and carbon performance. It examines how locally available outputs could substitute for external inputs and how the spatial organisation of Algiers affects the feasibility of these relationships. The analysis is therefore both technical and territorial.

Supported by the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the visiting doctoral project established an early collaboration around circular urban systems in Algiers. It provides a foundation for the later construction-sector project and illustrates how urban-metabolism models can be used to evaluate concrete transition strategies rather than only describe existing flows.
