This article evaluates the potential performance of an urban local-symbiosis strategy in Algiers. It examines whether locally organised exchanges among urban activities can reduce energy demand and carbon-dioxide emissions.
The study develops a methodology for identifying compatible resource outputs and inputs and for assessing the resulting energy and emissions effects. It situates these exchanges spatially, recognising that distance, infrastructure and the organisation of urban activities determine whether technical potentials can be realised.
The Algiers case demonstrates how urban-metabolism analysis can be used to compare transition scenarios and identify concrete opportunities for circular exchange. It also established a basis for later collaboration on construction materials and circularity in the city.
